I'm not sure I buy this. Yes, there has been a disproportionate focus on the role of rape in the conflict as opposed to death but I don't see how this sort of killing is any less rooted in pre-existing stereotypes about how Westerners perceive Africa.
I mean stuff like 'The Heart of Darkness' is all about murder and has very little, if I recall correctly, on sexual violence.
